SURE, ‘TIS THE HIBERNIAN BRIGADE,

LININ’ UP FOR TO START THE BIG PARADE!

CITY REVISES EVENT CHARGES ISSUE

In January, the Salt Lake City Mayor’s office re-defined its policy at least for this year, which in effect states that the Hibernian Society’s St. Patrick’s Parade is a ‘free expression’ event and thus exempt from  the additional charges.

CONCERT HITS  MARK

On Friday, February 5, we produced our first annual  ‘Save The Parade’ Concert, which has been heralded a huge success.

The pipers, musicians and dancers provided an evening of excellent entertainment. Audience enthusiasm and appreciation drew cheers of approval throughout the evening.

By way of explanation for the need for the Concert, please know that over the years, Parade and SIAMSA costs have risen significantly and member support in the form of annual dues renewals have declined. Our operating costs are actually intended to include all events throughout the year.  Some events cover costs, others do not.

For this reason, we again ask that you please renew your dues.  The Society is still faced with the fact that less than 50% of our members are paying their dues.  Think about it.  You joined the Hibernian Society as a matter of pride in your Irish heritage.  Please let that same pride in your ancestry influence your support of this Organization.

HIBERNIAN ELECTIONS SCHEDULED

At the next regular monthly meeting on February 16, the process of selecting  new officers will begin.  The process begins with nominations for the following offices. Elections will be held at the March meeting on March 2nd.

The office of president, currently held by Ted McDonough, will be filled by automatic accession of the existing 1st Vice President, Joe Brownt.

The office of 1st vice president is usually filled by the existing 2nd Vice President. Currently held by Patrick Lambert.

The office of 2nd Vice President becomes vacant, and nominations will be accepted for that office.

The office of Treasurer is currently held by Kathleen Glasheen. (Note: It is the custom that the Treasurer is usually re-elected without dispute, since it is such a technical position). Should Kathleen not desire to continue to serve, nominations will be accepted for that office.

The office of Secretary is currently held by Kim Colby. Nominations will be accepted for that office.

There are five trustees  One trus-tee office is for a one-year term which is automatically filled by the retiring Society President.  That office is currently held by former president John Welsh, who will be replaced by this year’s retiring president, Ted McDon-ough.

The four remaining trustees serve two year terms which are staggered so that two of the four trustees’ terms expire every year.

This year then, we shall nominate two trustees to fill the vacant positions.

The process of election of officers should be taken very seriously.  Candidates for all offices should be members in good standing who have been active members for at least two years.  On election night, March 2, nominees should be prepared to state their qualifications for the office they seek, and why they should be elected.

Waking Erin Concert

On Saint Patrick's day, “Excel-lence In The Community” presents in concert the celebrated Celtic Harper, Cynthia Douglass and her ensemble, ‘Waking Erin’ (formerly called Celtic Harpistry) at the Rose Wagner Center for the Performing Arts at 7:30 PM. The ensemble includes fiddle, cello, Bodhran, pipes, vocals and keyboards. Dancers too.  Waking Erin brought down the house last year at the Grand Theatre for our annual St. Patrick's day event. We recently presented them in concert in Duchesne Utah. Again the response was dramatic. One man stood was overheard after the ovation at the end, tears in his eyes. 'I don't think I have ever really heard a harp before’.

The music is authentic, the arrangements sophisticated and varied, from lively dances to beautiful ballads. Hibernian members are being offered a 30% discount on ticket prices, (regular price $15). I suggest that we all take advantage of this offer.  It will be a splendid evening, nicely capping off St. Patrick’s Day.

HOY ANNOUNCED

Every year, the Hibernian Society announces a special award given to a special member who not only attends every function, but also volunteers for set up, decorates tables, takes tickets, helps with the cooking, washes dishes, greets arrivals and does everything else except maybe play the bass drum at funerals.

We all stand in awe of this lady. This year’s honoree is . . . (drum roll) . . .

Carolyn Fredin

. . . without whom there might not have been a SIAMSA last March, a Christmas Party last December, nor a concert on February 5.

Carolyn will be honored at the Parade and also at the St. Patrick’s Day Luncheon. Thank you, Carolyn!

A Scary Story from Dublin

This happened a while ago in Dublin , and even though it sounds like an  Alfred Hitchcock tale, its true.  John Bradford, a Dublin University student, was on the side of the road hitchhiking on a very dark night and in the midst of a storm. The night was rolling on and no car went by. The storm was so strong he could hardly see a few feet ahead of him. Suddenly, he saw a car slowly coming  towards him and stopped. John, desperate for shelter and without thinking  about it, got into the car and closed the door only to realize there was nobody  behind the wheel and the engine wasn't on!!
The car started moving slowly. John looked at the road ahead and saw a curve approaching. Scared, he started to pray, begging for his life. Then, just  before the car hit the curve, a hand appeared through the window and turned the wheel. John, paralyzed with terror, watched as the hand repeatedly came through the window, but never touched or harmed him.. Shortly thereafter John  saw the lights of a pub appear down the road so, gathering strength, he jumped out of the car and ran to it. Wet and out of breath, he rushed inside and started telling everybody about  the horrible experience he had just had.  A silence enveloped the pub when everybody realized he was crying and....wasn't drunk. Suddenly, the door opened, and two other people walked in from the stormy night. They, like John, were also soaked and out of breath. Looking around, and seeing John Bradford sobbing at the bar, one said to the other...

“Look Paddy...there's the gobshite that got in the car while we were trying so hard to  push it!!!!”'

IF YOU’RE IRISH . . .

If you’re Irish, Come into the Parlour,

There’s a welcome there for you!

And if your name is Timothy or Pat,

As long as ye come from Ireland There’s a welcome on the mat!

And if ye come from the Mountains of Mourne,

Or Killarney’s Lakes so blue,

We’ll sing you a song and we’ll make it a fuss

Whoever you are,  you’re one of us!

If you’re Irish, This is the Place for You!

This is the theme for this year’s Parade.  It is an invitation for every Irish family to come march in the Parade.  The highlight of every Parade is the “IRISH FAMILIES OF UTAH” entry. In this group, the families are grouped according to the Province in Ireland from which your family came.  If you don’t know where they came from, call me!  I might be able to help you locate the county and province which claims you.

Ask your neighbors, and fellow parishoners to join in the fun. Ask your pastor to put it in the bulletin, and announce it from the pulpit.  Don’t miss out on the fun! All entries in the Parade need to send in an entry form.  If you need an entry form, please call me. – 801 580-0802(cell).
